A powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake in the Gulf of Cyprus on Friday morning (29/3) was felt especially in many parts of the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands, while residents of Attica were also shaken.
In Ilia, residents took to the streets in protest, while schools were closed by order of Deputy Governor Nikos Korovesis for precautionary reasons.

Inspections at Zacharos Schools – Damage to old facilities
The earthquake was strongly felt in many parts of Messinia and Ilia, but also in Zakynthos, Aetoloakarnania, Tripoli, Corinthia and Attica, Lower Italy and especially in Bari, Sicily and Calabria.
“The earthquake was particularly intense in our area. It lasted and caused great concern”, the mayor of Zakharos, Konstantinos Mitropoulos, described in .
In the municipality of Trifilia in Messinia, it was decided to evacuate school units in the area.
At the same time, he mentioned that the school buildings are being inspected and the collapsing walls, pens and bridges are being damaged.
“Schools are being inspected by municipal workers and engineers. In older facilities like the municipal stadium, there are some problems, while walls and sheds falling and damage to bridges have been recorded”, said Mr. Mitropoulos emphasized that there were only material damages and no injuries.
Notably, the municipality of Trifilia in Messinia decided to evacuate school units in the area.
Also, for precautionary reasons, the headquarters of the Regional Division of Ilia in Birkos, as well as the courts of Pyrkos and Amaliada, will be closed today following the decision of the Civil Defense Coordination Organization to hold an extraordinary meeting.
