Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff of the danger of a major conflict in Lebanon, during his meeting today.
US Air Force Gen. Charles Brown arrived in Egypt hours after the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement fired rockets and drones at Israel, which responded with strikes on Lebanese territory.
A statement from Sisi’s office said the Egyptian president told Brown that the international community must “make every effort and intensify pressure to calm tensions and stop the escalation that threatens the stability and security of the entire region.”
The statement added that Sisi warned the head of the American wing of “the dangers of opening a new front in Lebanon and stressed the need to ensure Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty.”
For his part, Brown did not make any statements during the visit, during which he met with the Egyptian Minister of Defense and the Commander of the Armed Forces.
Speaking to Reuters on Saturday before arriving in the region, Brown indicated that he intended to discuss ways to avoid any further escalation of tensions that could lead to a wider conflict.
A spokesman for the US commander said Brown discussed during the meetings ways to “avoid escalation of the conflict.”
Before heading to Egypt, Brown was in Jordan, where he held talks with the commander of the Jordanian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Yousef Huneiti, in Amman.
A spokesman for Brown said the two men discussed “regional tensions and ways to de-escalate them”. They also noted “the immediate need to reach agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages”.
The administration of US President Joe Biden is trying to limit the effects of the war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, which has entered its eleventh month.
The war has seen clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen against ships in the Red Sea.
Meanwhile, US forces have been attacked on their bases in Syria, Iraq and Jordan by militias close to Iran.
In recent weeks, the US military has reinforced its forces in the Middle East to protect against any new attacks by Iran and its allies. The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which replaced the Theodore Roosevelt, has been deployed to the region.
Meanwhile, the United States sent a squadron of F-22 Raptors to the region and deployed a submarine carrying cruise missiles.
