So far, no Samsung phone has offered a similar feature – which in Apple’s case is limited to a few countries – but that looks set to change with the Galaxy S24 series early next year.
At Semiconductor Expo 2023, Jun Young In Park, President of SLSI Business Division at Samsung Electronics, said: He said Samsung will launch satellite communication in smartphones next year. Considering that the Galaxy S series is the South Korean company’s flagship smartphone line, it is likely that Park’s report “references” the Galaxy S24.
However, interestingly, rumors in the past suggested that Samsung would debut satellite calling on its smartphones later this year, something that was ultimately not confirmed. With his support Snapdragon satellite On the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, there were no technical limitations preventing the Galaxy S23 series from offering it. However, Samsung’s TM Roh said the company chose not to do so due to inadequate infrastructure among other factors.
The Galaxy S23 series of smartphones does not have the necessary hardware for Snapdragon Satellite, so even a software update will not be able to enable the satellite functionality. The S24 series will likely be the first series from Samsung to have built-in satellite capabilities.
Since the launch of the S23 series, Samsung has confirmed that the Exynos 5300 modem also supports non-terrestrial network connections. Although many smartphones include this modem such as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8, none of them currently use this feature.
Rumors suggest that both Exynos and Snapdragon chipsets will be found in various Galaxy S24 models, raising the question of whether all S24 devices will offer satellite connectivity.
If the rumored specifications are correct, with the Exynos 2400 in the S24 and S24 Plus and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the S24 Ultra, it is unclear which smartphones will support satellite mode. The Exynos 5300 modem in low-end models can allow access to non-terrestrial networks (NTN). But the Snapdragon Satellite in the S24 Ultra uses a different protocol and for satellite functionality on all models, Samsung must support both at the same time. That sounds tough and gives more points to the Ultra model for being the only one to offer this feature.
