This move comes in response to recent changes Apple has made to its ecosystem following the implementation of the Digital Marketing Act (DMA) in the European Union.
Epic Games, known for its long-running dispute with Apple over App Store policies, has provided a large grant (MegaGrant) to AltStore PAL in recognition of its innovation in app distribution. This funding will allow AltStore PAL to cover the Core Technology Fee (CTF) charged by Apple, a fee that increases with the number of users.
Until recently, AltStore PAL charged its users around €1.50 per year to cover this cost. By removing this subscription, the alternative app store is expected to become more attractive to EU residents, as the absence of a financial barrier often attracts more users.
AltStore PAL sets itself apart from Apple’s official App Store by offering apps that don’t comply with the company’s strict guidelines. For example, users can find torrent tools, which are usually banned in the official store. This variety of apps offered makes AltStore PAL an interesting alternative, although it is unlikely to completely replace Apple’s App Store.
For already registered users, AltStore PAL has announced that it will automatically cancel their annual subscriptions when they expire, without any additional charges. Additionally, the company has promised to reward its loyal users in a future update, although the details of this reward have not yet been revealed.
The move by AltStore PAL and the support provided by Epic Games reflects ongoing efforts to diversify and compete in the iOS app market, particularly in the European Union where new regulations have paved the way for alternative app stores. At the same time, it highlights the ongoing rift between big tech companies and their attempts to influence the digital landscape in their favor.
