The Blues, led by Didier Deschamps, will be Spain’s opponents in the first semi-final of Euro 2024. France were the big winners in the second quarter-final, against Portugal, to get the “ticket” to the next stage, on penalty kick. The procedure, 5-3, where Joao Felix was the killer for the Iberians, because he was the only one who missed from the… white bullet.
Evolution of combat
The match started with both teams more willing to close the spaces towards their own area, which led to the disappearance of good moments in attack. The first threat came in the 20th minute for France, but Diogo Costa was in the right place for Theo Hernandez’s powerful shot, while two minutes later, Mbappé broke down the left, but Diogo Costa and Ruben Dias beat Kante.
The Portuguese response came just before the end of the first half, when Bruno Fernandes executed a direct free kick in the 42nd minute, but the ball went wide of the goal without causing problems for Maignan.
Big chances in the second half
The second half began again with France showing more willingness to attack, but in the 50th minute Diogo Costa saved a Mbappe shot, and two minutes later, Real Madrid’s new star Kolo Muani’s switch was not the best and some threat was wasted.
After an hour, Portugal wasted big chances to open the scoring. First, in the 61st minute, Bernardo Silva faced Maignan and shot the ball, but the French goalkeeper saved it and as the match progressed, Cancelo’s shot went wide.
Two minutes later, the Iberians threatened again, this time with a direct shot from Vitinha from Leao’s turn, but Maignan was on hand to save and then head the ball into the net for a Cristiano Ronaldo corner.
The French rose up and in the 66th minute, Ruben Dias blocked a powerful shot from Kolo Muani from inside the penalty area, and four minutes later, Camavinga missed from a good place inside the area.
Thus, the two teams qualified for extra time, where Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to exploit Conceicao’s turn, as his shot went wide of the goal, and in the 102nd minute, Upamecano cleared Leao’s shot over the goal line.
Portugal’s next chance came in the 108th minute when Joao Felix headed at the far post from a Conceicao cross, but the ball went wide of Maignan’s right post. Nothing changed in the following minutes and qualification was decided on penalties.
