Evia fire: no active front – damage to crops and infrastructure

The fire that broke out in Evia yesterday, Monday, continued its destructive work today, however, there are great fears of a resurgence.

Firefighters are alerted by strong winds in the area, while aerial vehicles drop water on unburned low vegetation.

“We crossed the water supply pipe from where the fire broke out, and now we are without water,” Mayor Kimis Aliverio said.

205 firefighters are at the scene along with 11 teams of pedestrians and 56 vehicles, while 19 aerial vehicles (13 planes and 6 helicopters, one of which is for coordination) are assisting from the air. At the same time, volunteers, local government water carriers and project machinery help.

Meanwhile, a firefighter yesterday and another firefighter this morning were injured and taken to Aliveri Health Center after suffering burns on his face and hands while working at the fire front in Girija.

It is recalled that in the morning the residents of Greece received a new message from 112 with instructions to move towards Alivari. Earlier, residents of Petria received a message from 112 with instructions to evacuate due to fire towards Agios Apostolis and Kalamos.

Damage to crops and infrastructure

The fire burned in the forest causing damage to crops and infrastructure.

According to N. Barako, mayor of Kymi-Alyverio, who spoke to ERTNews: “There is destruction in the forest area, but also crops, mainly olive trees and some vines. Of course, there are also infrastructure disasters. Also, we are currently without water because the drinking water pipe went from the place of fire.
