Evros: Hail the size of a walnut fell – damage to crops

Hail size… A walnut fell in Evros, 24 hours after a heatwave hit the region – as well as the entire country – on Thursday.

The storms that erupted after the heat wave were accompanied by hailstorms, which completely destroyed sunflower and cotton crops in some villages, but also grain that farmers did not have time to grind, Evros News reported.

Lambros Cumbridis, president of Orestiada’s Agricultural Cooperative Union, expressed his frustration at the scale of the disaster.

According to him, after a rough estimate, the disaster affected 100,000 hectares of farmland.

Fields “turned white” by hail

Hail reached the municipality of Tidymotiko, damaging crops and vines, beans and corn there.

In the following video, the hail appears to have “whitened” the fields.

According to information from ERT Orestiada, the hailstorm lasted about 20 minutes and affected unharvested crops in the villages of Ampelakia, Mikri and Megali Toxipara, Sterna, Pataki, Keramos, Raisia, Valtos, Vaissa, Neohori, Chakos, Kastanis, Elafochori, Doxori. , Metaxades, Alepochori, Dafni, Hionades, Poimeniko, Helidona and other areas.
