Gareth Southgate is a former England international after eight years on the bench with the Three Lions, having captained the team in 102 games.
A new chapter in the England national team, with Gareth Southgate resigning as technical director of the Three Lions, which he announced in a message on the English Football Association website.
With Southgate at the helm, the Three Lions have continued for eight years, appearing in two consecutive European Championship finals. In the 2018 World Cup, England reached the semi-finals (losing to Croatia), while in 2022 they reached the quarter-finals (losing to France).
Possible replacements are Eddie Howe, Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter and current England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley.
Gareth Southgate’s message and message in detail: “As a proud Englishman, it has been an honour to play for England and to manage England. It means everything to me and I have given it my all.
But it was time for a change and a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.
I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football. In that time, including eight years as England manager, I have been supported by some fantastic people, for whom I thank them from the bottom of my heart.
There couldn’t have been anyone better around me than Steve Holland. He’s one of the most talented managers of his generation and he was phenomenal.
I have had the privilege of leading a great group of players over 102 matches. Each one of them has been proud to wear the Three Lions and has been a credit to their country in so many ways.
The team we went to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the title we all dream of.
A special thanks goes to the Hall staff who have provided me and the players with unwavering support over the past eight years. Their hard work and dedication inspires me every day and I am so grateful to them – “the amazing team behind the team.”
We have the best fans in the world and their support means a lot to me. I am an England fan and I always will be.
I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players continue to create more special memories, connect and inspire the nation as we know it.
Thanks for everything England“
