Fire in Rethymno: Message from 112 – “Avoid Agios Vasilios area”

The fire department has been alerted for the fire in Rethymno, while citizens have already been sent a message with 112 to avoid the Agios Vasilios area.

Ground and air forces were immediately mobilized as a fire broke out in the grassy area.

20 vehicles of the fire service with 45 firefighters are operating at the scene, assisted by aerial firefighting vehicles.

According to neakriti.gr, the deputy governor of Rethymno, Maria Leoni, assured that no residential areas were threatened and that the battle was taking place at a high altitude, above the village of Akuseliana, and fortunately there were no strong winds.

The fronts at Heraklion were limited

A major mobilization of the fire department is currently underway to put out two fires that broke out in different parts of the Heraklion regional division. One concerns a fire in Brineas, Cortina municipality, while another fire erupted in a landscaped area in Argalochori, Minoa Pediatos municipality.

“Ground and air forces immediately rushed to Prinias and are in action,” Yiannis Leontarakis, head of civil defense for the Crete region, told APE-MPE.

According to Giorgos Sikalas, commander of Crete’s fire services, in Prinia Front and Arkalochori, the fire is safely contained, while strong forces remain at the scene.

Strong winds are blowing in both areas, making it difficult to put out the fire.
