If you think that the flight attendant greets passengers on the plane is welcoming them kindly, then you are right. But he doesn’t do it just for himself.
One flight attendant recently revealed the ultimate goal in a video that has garnered more than 6.2 million views on TikTok. “Did you know that your flight attendant doesn’t just greet you out of courtesy?” Wizz Air flight attendant Rania captioned a video showing her making the announcement on board.
Reasons why flight attendants welcome you when you board the plane
And as he reveals in the video, their greeting, beyond just a nice gesture, hides more. “The flight attendants greet you to check if you’re too drunk or sick to fly,” he adds, adding that it’s also useful to “know who can help us in an emergency.”
On their own terms, the crew is looking for “healthy passengers” who can help “evacuate an aircraft.”
They also seek the opposite, so as not to put some passengers – including children, the elderly and those with physical and mental disabilities – in the exit line, where immobility may hinder the evacuation process.
Fan reactions were mixed.
Many users commented on the viral video with mixed feelings. One wrote: “The flight attendants are minding their own business,” while another commented: “I knew you were judging me!”
However, most seemed more annoyed by the crew members’ alleged duties to control drunkenness. “I have to be drunk to fly otherwise I feel terrible,” wrote one, while another said: “I once had to hold my breath because I said ‘goodnight’ to the very nice flight attendant when she greeted me. I was sober.”
However, checking whether passengers are drunk or not seems more and more necessary, given what is happening recently with drunk passengers.
