From Monday… a ticket to shop at the market

Tomorrow, Monday October 10, Thessaloniki’s new business hours have been decided by the city’s Chamber of Commerce (ESTH) in an effort to reduce energy costs.

The new measure will be applicable on an optional basis and as estimated by retail executives, it is estimated to reduce energy consumption by 50% for the proposed hours or 5-7.5% of the total daily cost.

In particular, stores will operate:

Monday, Wednesday: 10.00 – 16.00, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 10.00 – 19.00

The decision of the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce is due to low turnover, a vertical drop in traffic, increased liabilities and excessive electricity bills, elements that create the scene of a “deep winter”. At the same time, employees are taking a wait-and-see approach, clearly worried about the potential impact on jobs and wages.

In his statements, the president of ESTH, Pantelis Filippides, stressed: “The new schedule begins. We have announced it, nothing has changed.

“Everyone can say whatever they want,” he added. It would be good if he could tell us how we can solve the problem by reducing the energy consumption in our stores by 15%, which is what the EU and the government are asking for.”
