Mediators from Egypt and Qatar have told Israeli officials that Hamas leader Yahya Shinur wants a ceasefire agreement to end the war in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli source familiar with the matter told CNN.
“Nobody knows what Bibi wants,” the source added, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by his nickname.
The same source said that American officials informed their Israeli counterparts of the need to reach an agreement immediately to avoid a regional war.
New round of talks
The Israeli government agreed to resume talks next Thursday, August 15, with the aim of declaring a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and releasing the hostages still held by Hamas, after the intervention of the mediating countries, the United States, Egypt and Qatar, which warned the warring parties that there is “no time to waste and no excuse” for further delay.
The CNN report comes a day after Israel bombed a school in Gaza City, which the Israeli military claimed was a “command center” for Hamas “terrorists,” killing more than 100 people.
Meanwhile, many analysts believe that the selection of Yahya Sinwar, a wanted man in Israel who is considered one of the masterminds of the October 7 attack, to lead Hamas after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, which his enemies attributed to Israel, has made indirect negotiations more difficult.
