Our planet is currently passing through the massive tail of Comet 109/Swift-Tuttle, filling our skies with a meteor shower, the Perseids. This is the most impressive rainfall of the year, which lasts almost all summer but will peak in the early hours of Sunday, August 13.
The conditions could not be more perfect. The moon is only 8% illuminated and will not obstruct the view. The scene will be visible throughout the northern hemisphere. If you move away from cities and bright light sources, you will be able to see about 1 meteor per minute! Just turn your attention to the constellation Perseus. You don’t need any special equipment, just let your eyes get used to the dark for about 30 minutes.
It only takes an instant after meteors hit air molecules in the atmosphere for the light to appear, which you see as a bright streak in the sky. The ideal time is before sunrise on the 13th of the month, facing east or northeast.
If for any reason you can’t watch the rain in your area, you can tune in to the channel below, which in collaboration with NASA will broadcast the Perseid shower live.
