Director Giorgos Zois highlights the arrogance of the New Democracy government and accuses Kyriakos Mitsotakis of the recent devastating fires and crime in Tempe.
The director, who won the director’s award for “Arcadia” at the 30th Sarajevo International Film Festival, was a storm. As he pointed out, Greece is not only living your legend in Greece, but there are other things going on.
“Unfortunately, the forest (in the film) no longer exists because of the summer fires. The government blames the unpredictable fires and not its policies because when heroic firefighters fight for their rights, they face police brutality,” Giorgos Zois said at the beginning, adding:
“A year ago, we had a fatal accident in Tempe where several students were killed. The government again blamed the train operator to cover up his responsibility for the electronic system not working – if it had worked, all those lives could have been saved. The train operators had pointed out the problems 9 months before the accident but were again ignored.
George Zois also referred to the fiasco with the Ministry of Culture’s Oscars Committee, stressing: “Almost all Greek directors and producers withdrew our films from the evaluation process for Greece’s nomination to the Oscars because the Committee was suddenly dismissed without explanation from its duties and replaced with another controversial explanation. Once again the Ministry is blaming one of its employees. We will continue to fight united against the state’s indifference and arrogance.”
