On Monday night (12/8) in Glyfada, authorities arrested two minors aged 15-16 for a fire in an inaccessible area behind Terpsithia’s football stadium.
The students were taken along with their parents to Klifada police station where they gave a statement, saying they set the fire “for fun”, according to reports.
According to an announcement by the Glyfada municipality, the two youths were found “at work”, chased by residents, identified and arrested. The fire was extinguished immediately.
“Fortunately everything is fine. Today before 8:00 pm, a fire broke out at Ano Glyfada in Terpsithia, behind the football stadium. The impassable and inconvenient fire scene, our civil defense and our volunteers patrolling the area, with two helicopters, tried to extinguish the fire. Firefighters also arrived immediately and extinguished the fire. Helicopters used water from a tank we had installed in the area, allowing them to operate in a very efficient manner without any delay,” Glyfada Mayor Giorgos Papanikolaou said in his statements.
Meanwhile, he added: “According to the information we have received, today’s fire is the result of arrogance. A big thank you to the fire brigade, our civil defense, our volunteers and volunteer groups from neighboring municipalities. It is needless to say that we are constantly on the watch and guard throughout the night, lest the candles should be rekindled in the slightest.”
“We remain fully alert and vigilant for the continuation of the fire season. Firefighting forces must be concentrated in Northeast Attica to avoid an incident occurring elsewhere at this critical time,” said Mr. Papanicolaou concluded.
