start From May 15, the majority of Google Photos users will be able to use features that were previously exclusive to Pixel owners and Google One subscribers. The update eliminates the need for users to upgrade their subscription to access additional editing tools from Google.
One standout feature is of course Magic Editor, an image editing tool that supports generative AI functionality, which debuted as a flagship feature on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Typically, these features remain exclusive to new Pixel devices for six months after launch. However, Google is not only bringing the Magic Editor to older Pixel smartphones, but is also making it accessible to any Google Photos user with a compatible Android or iOS device, regardless of their Google One subscription status. Non-subscribers will be limited to 10 saved edits per month, while Pixel owners and paid subscribers will enjoy unlimited usage.
Additionally, legacy features like Photo Unblur and Magic Eraser, which were previously limited to Pixel owners and some Google One subscribers, will now be available to all Photos users for free. Google has published a detailed list of these features In the photo community, which includes options such as blur processing in portrait mode and lighting effects. It's worth noting that while these features are useful, they may not be as groundbreaking as the company's latest offerings.
Other generative AI features that debuted with the Pixel 8 series, like Best Take and Audio Magic Eraser, will remain exclusive to newer Pixel devices for now.
To take advantage of Magic Editor, users will need a device with a 64-bit chipset, at least 4GB of RAM, and iOS 15 or Android 8.0. These specifications can also be considered generous, considering that the AI processing is done in the cloud.
