Today’s announcements of Google’s first smartwatch confirm information we’ve been hearing from unofficial sources for months. The Pixel watch comes in four colors: black, white, gray and gold. Each color matches one of the colors available on the Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro, an interesting detail in Google’s attempt to aesthetically relate its new devices. The watch case is made of stainless steel, which is heavier and more durable than aluminum, while the virtual straps are based on the active style.
It comes in a single size (41mm) while the 1.2-inch screen could have a brightness of 1,000 nits, but it could create vibes for its large margins, although aesthetically the Pixel Watch is one of the nicer smartwatches we’ve seen. It is protected by Gorlla Glass 5 while on the right side we see the rotating bezel that allows navigation in the menus.
The Google Pixel Watch runs on Wear OS 3.5, making it the latest Wear OS device on the market right now. It will have all the usual features of Wear OS, including access to the Play Store, and of course compatibility with Google services like Maps and Wallet as well as the new version of the Google Home app. The watch also has a close partnership with Fitbit, with features that Fitbit users are accustomed to, such as Active Zone Minutes, Daily Readiness Score, and continuous heart rate monitoring.
We’ve been hearing since May that the Pixel Watch could include an older Samsung chipset, which is advice that eventually turns out to be true as the device is powered by the Exynos 9110, which debuted on the first generation Samsung Galaxy Watch back in 2018. Is that Google has also included a Cortex-M33 coprocessor, which we hope will ease the burden on Samsung’s aging SoC for certain tasks. In other technical characteristics we find 2 GB of RAM as well as 32 GB of storage. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 series has 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage.
Battery life is a sticking point for many, especially Fitbit loyalists looking to try out a more complete smartwatch experience. Google lists the Pixel Watch’s battery life as “up to 24 hours” with health tracking features enabled, which we hope is a conservative estimate. Competing smartwatches from companies like Samsung and Apple do better, while Fitbit offerings like the Sense 2 can last up to three days on a charge with the always-on display activated. The Pixel Watch can charge up to 50% of the battery in half an hour using the included charging plug (which, fortunately, has a USB-C connector on the other end), and a full charge takes about 80 minutes.
The Pixel watch is available in both Bluetooth / Wi-Fi and LTE versions. Pre-orders begin today, while general availability in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Japan, Australia and Taiwan begins on October 13. The Wi-Fi version will cost 379 euros while the LTE version will be priced at 429 euros.
