The Christos ZerefosThe Secretary General of the Academy of Athens spoke with ANT1 and the program “Studio with a View” about the summer temperatures and the incredible tragedy of the loss of a 13-year-old girl in Halkidiki yesterday, June 28. Life when she was struck by lightning.
Mr. Gerifos spoke about the dangers of swimming during lightning strikes.
“Lightning finds the highest point in the ocean. Our head is the highest point when we are in the water.” Christos Zerefos noted.
He said about the lightning incident “It’s a very violent event in nature. It’s a direct charge to the ground. But Burini doesn’t start suddenly. We have time to get away. We have to get out of the water immediately and out of the sea quickly. Our body is a good conductor for lightning. There’s a fuse in the car.”.
Regarding the temperature we can expect throughout the summer, Mr. Zerefos said: “It’s going to be one of the hottest summers. The ocean is still warm, 1 to 2 degrees above normal. Because there’s not much moisture on the ground, any fire that starts, spreads quickly.”
“I don’t know if another record will be broken this year. We broke every record last year, the year before that, and 2021. As the years pass, the planet warms. We are 2 points above normal in the Mediterranean and I think we will break records. But the technology is there and the renewable energy sources are sufficient to meet the Paris Agreement so that Europe’s energy mix in 2030 consists of renewable sources. The general secretary of the Academy of Athens concluded about the “temperature records” set this year.
