Health alert in Feria from biological cleaning

All the untreated sewage of Veria ends up in Aliakmonas due to the failure of the biological treatment, creating a health bomb for the city of 60,000 inhabitants. Since the day the biological sludge treatment line was removed, all the sludge ends up in the river without treatment. The biological cleanup of Veria has now become the biggest polluter of the Imathia prefecture, and despite the efforts of environmental groups in the area, no action has been taken to deal with the problem.

The matter has been brought before the municipal council several times, while the case has been before the public prosecutor since 2018, but it has not even been considered at the initial stage to date.

As Nikos Aslanoglu, a member of the Veria environmental group, the Greek Network of Environmental Organizations and the Greek Recycling Organization, explains to Zogla, it all started ten years ago when the management of the biological cleaning was handed over to a private contractor who removed the sludge from the treatment line. In fact, the contractor claims to be using a method that removes the sludge, which, as Mr. Aslanoglu explains, “does away with the natural rules.”

For seven years they also dumped sludge into the river from other cities’ bio-cleaning operations.

As if the environmental crime committed by the bio-cleaning of Veria was not enough, they brought bio-sludge from every corner of Greece for seven years and dumped it into the river. All this of course for a fee.

Complains about the above with the data in “the forest“Mr. Aslanoğlu said, speaking of a situation that municipal authorities are aware of but are deliberately not dealing with.

It is noteworthy that the concerned services conducted dozens of measurements in the river, and controlled and recorded the large quantities of sewage that end up in its waters.
