According to NASA, a meteor passed over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating about 30 miles above midtown Manhattan on Tuesday morning.

“Examination of seismic data in the area showed no evidence of an earthquake.”The agency said in a statement.

The USGS has no immediate indication of the source of the quake. Previous reports of quakes without an associated seismic signal have had atmospheric origins, such as sonic booms or weather-related phenomena.

NASA suspects the quake is linked to reports of military activity in the area.
