The device is lighter than its competitors – 239g – and extremely thin when opened – 5.3mm – while it has a larger battery, larger screens and comes with a periscope-type telephoto camera lens. More specifically, the Mate X3’s external screen has a diagonal of 6.4 inches, supports a resolution of 2,504 x 1,080 pixels, and a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the internal foldable screen has a diagonal of 7.85 inches. The foldable OLED display supports a resolution of 2,496 x 2,224 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz as well.
The folding hinge mechanism is very slim yet “narrow” enough to support setting the screen at different angles to facilitate various functions such as video capture, split video calls, content consumption/watching, and table function. Also thanks to its advanced design, the “puckering” on the inner screen is mild to unnoticeable.
Inside the device we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with 4G modem (as it is known, due to US sanctions, the well-known Chinese company is prohibited from using 5G technology in Western markets), 12 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage space, 512 GB or 1 TB depending on the version . It’s also water resistant, with IPX8 protection and supports two-way satellite communication, a feature we’ve seen lately being introduced more and more by smartphone manufacturers for emergency reasons.
At the back, the device has a triple main camera while there are two selfie cameras (one on each screen) based on an 8MP sensor. The main camera is based on a 50-megapixel sensor and an f: /1.8 aperture lens accompanied by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle f: /2.2 camera and an f: /3.4 periscope telephoto camera that relies on 12 MP sensors and supports 5x zoom.
The battery capacity of the Huawei Mate X3 is 4,800mAh and it supports 66W fast wired charging and 50W fast wireless charging. We expect to know more about the European launch of the device on May 9, at the Huawei show scheduled in Munich.
