Intel has announced its release window New series of Lunar Lake processors for laptops. The new x86 processors are expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2024, and are designed to support the new AI experiences that Copilot Plus computers announced yesterday.
Intel’s announcement coincided with Microsoft’s Surface and AI event, where the tech giant presented proposals based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon However, for its part, Intel claims that Lunar Lake processors deliver 1.4 times faster performance in Stable Diffusion 1.5 compared to the Snapdragon X Elite processor, which is based on the Arm architecture.
Lunar Lakes will include a central processing unit, an integrated Xe2 GPU, and a neural processing unit (NPU). Intel claims that the Lunar Lake processor offers three times higher performance in artificial intelligence functions, compared to its predecessor, Meteor Lake. This is because the NPU is capable of more than 40 tera operations per second (TOPS), much more than the 10 NPU TOPS offered by Meteor Lake, which is already integrated into a range of AI-enabled PCs already on the market.
Intel plans to integrate Lunar Lake into more than 80 new laptops from 20 manufacturers, with a goal of shipping 40 million AI-powered PC processors by the end of the year.
At Computex next month, we’re expected to get more information about Lunar Lake and where it ranks in the AI PC category versus AMD’s Zen 5 and Qualcomm’s Oryon.
