The Communication Ministers of Malaysia and Indonesia agreed on Friday to enhance bilateral cooperation in the areas of cybersecurity and communications.
During a meeting in Jakarta, Malaysia’s Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Anwar Musa, and his Indonesian counterpart, Johnny Gerard Plait, discussed various issues related to cybersecurity and digital space in their countries and within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). region, pledging to enhance their cooperation in these various aspects.
In a joint press conference after the meeting, Anwar Musa stressed that “national security should have priority in the face of rapid technological progress,” adding that he discussed with his Indonesian counterpart various issues related to strengthening the legal framework for cyber security and communications infrastructure. For his part, Johnny Gerard Blitt said he shares with his Malaysian counterpart “the same understanding regarding the protection of the digital space in Indonesia and Malaysia as well as within ASEAN, in order to make this space clean and beneficial to the communities”.
The two parties also agreed to strengthen cooperation in international forums, such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations development agency specialized in information and communication technologies.
This is the third meeting between senior officials in the past six months, and the most recent one was in Singapore.
