Inflation fell marginally in June, with prices of several food categories following a downward trend, while growth slowed in other cases. However, prices of services such as holiday packages and hotels increased significantly. Inflation fell to 2.3% in June from 2.4% in May and 3.1% in April.
According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, food and non-alcoholic beverages last month increased by 1.1% compared to May, against a marginal decrease of 0.5% recorded in the previous month compared to April. On an annual basis, the increase amounted to 2.1%. For another month, increases in olive oil played the main role, while in second place with the largest increase were mineral waters – soft drinks and fruit juices. Conversely, decreases were recorded in prices of fresh fruits and bread.
Re-evaluation Heroes
The top three sectors with the largest year-on-year increases were olive oil (54.8%), mineral water – soft drinks and fruit juices (8.1%), fresh fish (7.2%) and frozen vegetables (6.5%). Conversely, the fresh fruit and potatoes sector recorded the largest decline (7.4%) and (5.7%).
In the services sector, there is a 19.7% increase in air passenger transport, year-on-year, as well as 12.7% in holiday packages and 12% in hotels and motels.
In the energy sector, electricity prices fell by 12.2% year-on-year, while natural gas prices rose by 13.1%.
Compared to May, prices for breakfast cereals fell by 4.2%, yoghurt by 3.6% and fresh vegetables by 3%. In contrast, prices for fresh fruit rose by 18% and chocolate and chocolate products by 6.3%.
Everything increases
In detail, inflation resulted from the rise in indicators according to:
• 2.1% in the food and non-alcoholic beverages group, mainly due to higher prices of: meat (general), fresh fish,
Olive oil, frozen vegetables, sugar, chocolate, confectionery, ice cream, coffee, cocoa, tea, mineral water, soft drinks, fruit juices. Part of this increase was offset by lower prices mainly in: bread and cereals,
Dairy products, eggs, other cooking oils, fresh fruits, potatoes, and other foods.
• 1.8% in the alcoholic beverages and tobacco group, mainly due to higher prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).
• 4.6% in the clothing and footwear group, due to the rise in clothing and footwear prices.
• 2.2% in the health group, mainly due to higher prices of: pharmaceutical products, dentistry, and
Paramedical services, hospital care.
• 3.2% in the transportation group, mainly due to higher prices of: new cars, spare parts and accessories
Automobiles, fuel and lubricants, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, transport tickets
Airline passengers. Part of this increase was offset by a decline in prices of mainly used cars.
Cars.
• 1.8% in the group of recreational and cultural activities, mainly due to higher prices of: processing equipment
Information, small entertainment items, flowers, pets, entertainment and cultural services, newspapers, books and
Stationery, holiday package. Part of this increase was offset by lower prices mainly
Audio and video processing equipment.
• 3.5% in the education group, mainly due to higher prices for: pre-school and primary education fees,
Secondary education fees, higher education fees.
• 5.3% in the hotels, cafes and restaurants group, mainly due to the rise in prices of restaurants, sweets, cafes, canteens, hotels, motels and inns.
• 2.2% in the group of other goods and services, mainly due to higher prices in: hairdressers and shops
Personal care, other personal items, health insurance premiums, vehicle insurance premiums. Part of that increase
This was offset by lower prices mainly in other types of personal care products.
