Intercat signed a new contract with Egnatia Odos SA for the project “Urgent restoration and strengthening of the structural efficiency of the old bridge of the right branch of the Axios River”.
It is a project worth 13 million euros (including value-added tax), which aims to solve the problems and serious damage that appeared at a critical point on the national road, through intensive maintenance work, restoration and enhancement of the structural efficiency of the old Axios Bridge.
The old bridge of the right branch of Axios has been in use since 1973 (for the stream to Thessaloniki). Relevant static studies have found significant damage, whether due to the various flood phenomena that the area witnessed in the past or the frequent traffic of heavy vehicles, which led to a decrease in its safety factor to an unacceptable degree. The danger of the site has led to the restriction of traffic lanes as well as to interventions in speed limits, the permissible weight of loads, etc., measures that have caused a series of road safety problems.
The works in question, which will be undertaken by Intercat immediately, are considered absolutely necessary to achieve an acceptable structural and operational safety factor and restore the safe use of the bridge by passing vehicles.
Through the planned interventions, the bridge will be protected from the risk of unannounced collapse, while – at the same time – painful load restraint measures, which significantly hinder the smooth movement of heavy vehicles, as well as restrictions will be removed. Regarding the continuity of traffic between the western and eastern sectors of Ignatia Odos on the critical road section A/K Klidiou-A/K Kalochori.
