iPhone 16 Pro will get a telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom – iPhone

According to his latest post Digi TimesThe iPhone 16 Pro is expected to include a telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, a feature that has so far been exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Taiwanese companies Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical are said to be the main suppliers of camera components for the new iPhone 16 Pro. Largan, which is already the supplier of the periscope lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, may work with GSEO to increase availability of the lenses if it gets Apple’s approval. The GSEO project is being validated, and production is expected to begin in mid-July.

If the rumors are confirmed, potential iPhone 16 Pro buyers will be able to shoot with 5x optical zoom and up to 25x digital zoom. However, the related rumors are not new, as early as 2024, the Korean version of The Elec reported that Apple is planning to add a periscope lens to both iPhone 16 Pro models.

Display category analyst Ross Young says the change will be made possible by the larger screen size, which will allow more components to fit into the smaller Pro model. Rumors suggest that Apple is working on increasing the iPhone 16 Pro’s screen size to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max to 6.9 inches, with reduced bezels.

Additionally, Apple is expected to use Sony’s latest dual-layer system for the main lens of the Pro models. The new sensor promises improved low-light performance and better dynamic range. It may also come with a special coating to improve image quality and reduce reflections, a major issue with all iPhones. Meanwhile, the company is planning to add a 48-megapixel sensor to the ultra-wide lens.

For the standard iPhone 16 models, rumors suggest that the ultra-wide lens and wide-angle will have a vertical arrangement. The new designs also show that Apple is aiming for a slimmer notch for the main camera system, reminiscent of the iPhone X design.

Based on past years, the new iPhones are expected to be unveiled in the second week of September.
