At least 21 people were killed and 18 injured when A bus fell off a bridge in Mestrein VeniceIt caught fire, according to a more recent interim report provided to Italian public broadcaster RAI by Renato Borrazzo, head of transportation for the municipality of Venice.
According to the same official, Ukrainian citizens were on board the bus, while information indicates that among the victims also were tourists from Germany. The driver was Italian, aged 40, with seven years’ professional experience.
Among the wounded were at least two children.

The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Bugnaro, announced that he declared Wednesday a day of mourning in his city. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her support for the families of the victims.

According to information received from the newspaper Il Gazzettino, the bus that was transporting foreigners to a camping site near Venice caught fire before falling from a bridge in the Mestre region.
The driver reportedly tried to control the situation but was unable to avoid the bus falling onto the tracks directly under the bridge.

The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, recently stated that “Ukrainian passports were found on board the bus that fell from the Mestre Bridge».
According to several Italian media outlets, they were likely Ukrainian refugees who were temporarily staying at a campsite in Marghera, outside Venice.
According to Italian Interior Minister Matteo Villanduzzi, the bus was running on a natural gas engine, and the distance separating the bridge from the railway where the bus fell was about thirty meters.
The Italian minister did not rule out the possibility of a higher death toll.
