Jacksonville former Jaguars coach Urban Meyer has been fired for some reason, he told ESPN on Saturday with the intent of not paying him the remaining four years of his contract.
Sources inside the organization said that Jaguars’ reasons for withholding the remaining guarantees were not linked to a specific incident – but rather a set of events in which Jacksonville authorities believe the shooting was justified.
It is not uncommon for situations like this – including rejected guarantees – to be negotiated by both parties to avoid a long-term legal situation. Lawyers involved in any negotiations between Jaguars and the mayor will try to figure out if the situation can be resolved.
A spokesman for Jaguars owner Shad Khan told the Associated Press on Friday night that the decision to step down from the mayor came after Jacksonville’s 20-0 defeat in Tennessee on Sunday. The conversation between Khan and Meyer in the locker room after that stop – the mayor had no answers to the team’s grievances or how he planned to fix them – was sealed to a conclusion that Khan had been thinking about for weeks.
A spokesman told the AP that the only reason the final announcement of the decision was delayed was due to other events planned and had no connection with the former Jacksonville kicker. Josh LamboThe Tampa Bay Times alleges the mayor kicked him during training in August. Lambo’s story came out just hours before the Jaguars mayor’s shooting was announced.
The mayor’s 11-month tenure includes controversial viral videos showing a former coach behaving inappropriately with a woman at a restaurant / bar in Ohio after falling behind in a game against Cincinnati.
