Trump called the 70-year-old scion of the Kennedy political family an “incredible champion” of American values, “highly respected” and a “great person” before introducing him as a surprise guest at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Kennedy Jr. praised Donald Trump during his introduction, saying he shared his views on foreign policy, government oversight and “ending the epidemic of chronic disease.”
Kennedy explained in his remarks how he met with Trump last month after the assassination attempt, and then again in Florida weeks later, to talk about their shared values.
“We didn’t talk about the values that divide us, because we don’t agree on everything, but about the values and issues that unite us,” Kennedy said. “The topics he talked about included safe nutrition and ending the epidemic of chronic disease.”
“Don’t you want a president who will make America healthy again?” he said later.
Before inviting Kennedy to the stage, Trump said he would ask him to serve on a commission to investigate “the decades-long rise in chronic health problems, including autoimmune disorders, autism, obesity, infertility and more.”
Kennedy said he wanted to reduce the size of the U.S. military presence abroad. Kennedy ended his remarks without explicitly declaring his support for Trump. As the ceremony ended, graffiti and signs were displayed around the square reading “RFK Jr. Supports Trump.”
Earlier, when Kennedy announced he was suspending the race and endorsing Trump, he had said, “I’m not ending my campaign, I’m just suspending it,” and made clear that “my name will remain on the ballot in most states.”
That means, he said, “If you live in a democracy, you can vote for me without hurting or helping President Trump or Vice President Harris. In about 10 battleground states where my presence could cause ‘harm,’ I will remove my name and have already begun that process and ask voters not to vote for me.”
On why he supported Trump, he said: “It was freedom of speech, the war in Ukraine, and the war on our children.”
