A message of zero tolerance for the perpetrators of the brutal attack on the volunteers Barnita Civil Defense and Climate Change Minister Vassilis Kigilias was dispatched in his post.
“The authorities will do everything to severely punish this crime against all of us, our fellow citizens who have sacrificed themselves, and with the ideals of solidarity and giving, to protect nature,” he clarified.
At the same time, he wished the victims a speedy recovery and said, “We are on their side.”
“We met all the animals in the Greek countryside – only man harmed us”
The horrifying moments they experienced were described in an Instagram story by volunteers who decided to help VA Saving His Hood by collecting lots of trash from Western Burnita.
The operation would continue the next day, so some decided to spend the night in an abandoned building across from the Cold Spring Tribal Base.
Two cars arrived at the scene at dawn. When the youth noticed the campers, they approached them with flashlights and said, “Where are you from? We are from Menidi”. When they explained that they were volunteers cleaning up the mountain, the strangers dispersed. However, 10 minutes later, they returned in their cars, shouting “we’re back,” according to one of the victims of the attack.
“We couldn’t react because we were lying on the ground, so they started beating and stabbing us mercilessly,” says one of the victims, adding that they had no time to react.
He was stabbed four times
One of the volunteers was stabbed three times in the back and once in the shoulder, while his nose was broken by the blows. They say they spent half the night wondering about the fate of the volunteer with multiple stab wounds, but he escaped alive.
