How does a two-day heat wave develop?
The third heatwave in the country begins today. The new wave is expected to last until Wednesday, while a “breather” is expected from Thursday. At 16 days (since July 12), this is the longest heat wave recorded by modern weather stations.
Meteorologist Yiannis Kallianos analyzes the prevailing weather conditions for the coming days.
Very hot today
On Tuesday, the highest temperatures will be in Thessaly (44°C and locally 45°C) and the central continent (43-44°C). In other parts of the continent, the maximum temperature ranges from 39-41 degrees Celsius. In Attica their 39-40 degrees Celsius.
Wednesday is the peak of heat
On Wednesday, the mercury will rise further (in some areas) resulting in high afternoon temperatures in the following areas:
– Northern Evros: 43°C
– Plain of Central Macedonia: 41-42°C
– Thessaly: 44°C
– Central and Eastern Continent (mainly Phithiodita and Boeotia) : 44-45°C
– Central Evia: 43-44°C
– Attica: 43-44°C
Eastern Peloponnese (Corinthia, Argolis, Laconia and Eastern Arcadia) : 44-45°C
– North Crete: 41-42°C
Southern Crete: 43-44°C
In other parts of the country, the maximum temperature will be around 39-42 degrees Celsius.
Gallianos: “Attica will be unique because of the sea breeze”
As he asserts:
“Something that doesn’t always happen during a heat wave in Attica. In the midday and afternoon sea breezes, ie southerly 4-5 beaufort, will bring more snow from the Saronic and somewhat “relief” the Athenian Riviera, meaning that the coastal areas (mainly from Faliro to roughly Anavisos or south) will be wetted by the Saronic.
Hence the maximum temperature will be recorded within the province and mainly in eastern, central and northern regions away from the coast.
For example, 42-43°C and locally 44°C are expected in Malagasa, Ourobos, Acharnes, Marathona, Melissia, Vrilissia, Geraka, Spada, Koropi, Piania, Marcopoulo, Pallini, Maroussi and areas near the center of Athens or coastal areas along the Charon coast. Especially in the coastal suburbs the temperature is low.
In my opinion, from Malagasa to Tanagra (on the vast borders of Attica and Boeotia), the temperature is 44-45 degrees Celsius, and maybe a little more inland.
Mercury is retrograde from Jupiter
“A few days ago, it was strongly heard that Thursday would be a ‘hell’ day with mercury even at 48°C. Subtract 10 degrees because the end of the heatwave on Thursday will have a northwesterly wind of 7 Beaufort (so 37-38°C, and maybe 39-40°C in the heat sensitive areas (perhaps inland Argolis, Laconia and southern Crete).
On Friday, temperatures will drop further and will not exceed 35°C in any part of Greece. So 10 degrees Celsius less than Wednesday’s high.”
