The death of Konstantinos Stitlakos mourns Greek and Cypriot sports. The 36-year-old Greek Federation throwing coach of the Cyprus Amateur Athletic Association (KOEAS) was preparing in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where he died this morning (1/2) after a collision when he lost control of his car.
KOEAS broke the tragic news, expressing its condolences to his wife:
“The sudden news of the death of Konstantinos Stitlakos has caused great sadness in the Cypriot and Greek athletics family. The national hurling coach was training with his team in Potchefstroom, South Africa, and on the morning of February 1, 2024, he lost control of his car, resulting in his death in the accident!
The difficult role in identifying Kostas Statilakos was played by the athletes Apostolos Barilis and Alexandros Poursanidis, who confirmed the tragic accident.
Upon hearing this astonishingly tragic news, KOEAS contacted the Embassy of Cyprus in South Africa, in order to arrange the necessary procedures for the transfer of the body of our beloved Costas to Cyprus, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
KOEAS, which will cover all funeral costs, announces five days of mourning in memory of Kostas Statilakos and will announce details later.
Kostas Statilakos was born on December 30, 1987 in Lamia and was a hammer thrower, competing for the colors of Greece and Cyprus, having married our hero in the same event Skefi Theodorou, and they had twin daughters. In fact, a few days ago they celebrated their daughter's third birthday as a family! He is the Cypriot world record holder in the hammer throw with a distance of 75.32 metres, since May 16, 2015. The 35-year-old hammer throw coach was killed in a car accident in South Africa, where he was training with a group of athletes. The two-time hammer throw champion represented our country in international events, while a year ago 2012, after also marrying hammer throw champion Skevi Theodorou, he changed his nationality and competed for Cyprus at the European Championships in Helsinki and at the London Olympics.
Dedicated and passionate about what he did, Stetlakos was one of the most beloved people in athletics. In recent years, he has been a federal coach in Cyprus and has coached, among others, Apostolos Barelis and Alexandros Poursanidis, while still holding the Cyprus national record with a distance of 75.32 metres.
