The Greek youth basketball team was excellent in the match against Lithuania in the Eurobasket U20 quarterfinals, winning 87-82 and qualifying for the fourth place in the tournament.
After a derby in the first three quarters of the match, the Greek youth team managed to hit the gas in the last period and got a double-digit difference in the match. The Lithuanians lost in the final and “struggled” to pull off a big upset, but our national team “endured” and kept the lead until the end, getting a “ticket” to the semi-finals of the Eurobasket U20 Championship.
Amarousio’s Ioannis Karakostas was the Blue and White’s top scorer with 20 points, while Peristerio’s Vasilis Zogris had 16 points and 9 rebounds. Plotas (Prometheus Patras) and Samontorov (Panathinaikos) also scored in double figures, with 17 and 12 points respectively.
Quarters: 19-21, 37-39, 64-60, 87-82
Player stats: Karakostas 20 (5/7 3-pointers, 2/6 3-pointers, 4/5 shots, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 fouls), Plutas 17 (1/5 3-pointers, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Konstantinidis 2, Kapitakis 3 (1 3-pointer, 3/5 shots, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 blocks)
Greece is now in the medal “zone” and will win its second medal in a row after the bronze medal it won last year in Heraklion, Crete. The next opponent for the national youth team is France, and the match is scheduled for Saturday, July 20.
