Medical miracles or the path to a dystopia: Gates and Bezos invest in a company that implants microchips in human brains [βίντεο]

Bill Gates (Gates Frontier) and Jeff Bezos (Bezos Expeditions) are on the list of investors which will fund US brain transplant startup Synchron at $75 million, according to a press release published Thursday (12/15).

As stated in the press release, the startup has raised a total of $145 million.

Other investors include Reliance Digital Health Limited, Greenoaks, Alumni Ventures, Moore Strategic, Khosla Ventures, NeuroTechnology Investors and the University of Melbourne.

Synchron has developed the Synchron Switch device designed for paralyzed patients to be able to control electronic devices with their thoughts.

Unlike Elon Musk’s experimental Neuralink implant, which is surgically inserted into the brain, the Synchron Switch device is inserted via a catheter through the jugular vein in the neck through a minimally invasive endovascular procedure.

“The problem of paralysis is much bigger than people realise. One hundred million people worldwide suffer from paralysis of the upper extremities,” said Tom Oxley, CEO and founder of Synchron.

In July 2021, Synchron received the green light from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct human clinical trials. At that time, the company developed a Stentrode that would allow paralyzed people to operate digital devices to think.

Previous tests have proven successful

Synchron has already tested the device on four patients in Australia, two of whom were able to control their computers with their thoughts, thanks to the transmission of data from the motor cortex to the digital devices.

Last July, the company proceeded with the first implantation of the device in an American patient.

Synchron also has a clinical trial underway in the US that is evaluating the impact on everyday tasks such as: texting, online shopping, and telemedicine services.

In addition, the FDA granted the startup a Breakthrough Device designation in August 2020.
