Corruption charges facing S American Senator Bob Menendez And his wife Nadine, according to American media.
According to the indictment, from 2018 to 2022 the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from three businessmen in exchange for benefiting from Menendez’s influence for the benefit of businessmen and the Egyptian state.
The indictment stated, according to American media, that “these bribes included cash, gold, mortgage payments, a luxury car, and other items of value.”
Details of the indictment will be announced at a press conference later today. So far, Mr. Menendez has not made any comment.
Robert Menendez, Cuban-born, born 69 years ago in New York, is a veteran of Washington politicians. He was elected with the Democrats to represent New Jersey in the House of Representatives from 1993 to 2006 and then in the Senate, and is one of the most influential voices in diplomatic affairs in the American capital.
This is not the first time the senator has faced federal justice. He was tried for corruption in 2015, but his trial ended and was dismissed in 2017 in the absence of a unanimous jury verdict.
The Department of Justice – headed by Republican Donald Trump – asked the judge to drop all corruption cases against Robert Menendez. At the time, Mr. Menendez was accused of using his office to protect the interests of a wealthy friend of the Florida ophthalmologist, businessman and donor Salomon Melgen in exchange for gifts and campaign contributions.
