Firefighters have been battling the blaze through the night to “douse” the blaze in Rethymnon. A message came from “112” shortly before 2 a.m. asking residents of 8 areas to be ready.
The fire in Agios Vasilios Rethymnon on Tuesday night (25.06.2024) is burning agro-olivedic and agricultural land, while no residences are threatened.
In fact, before 2 am a message was sent by “112” to the residents of Shaktouria, Kato Shaktouria, Agios Pavlos, Agia Paraskevi, Triopetra, Akumia, Melampes and Krya Vrysi to be alert and follow the instructions of the authorities.
At this time (3:30 am) the front of the fire extends from the area of Achomia, Prodromos, Crea Vrisi and towards Triopetra.
After midnight, fire brigades have been reinforced and are now trying to:
130 firefighters from all over Crete, 33 vehicles, five water tankers and 18 civil defense vehicles.
Crete’s civil defense is on alert, so hotels can also be evacuated if settlements need to be evacuated and the fire reaches the sea.
It is noteworthy that the long-standing part of Rethymno burned three times and “provided” one of the biggest fires in the last 20 years in Crete.
