Microsoft is preparing to finally unveil its vision for personal computers with artificial intelligence Next month, at a Seattle event. According to press reports, Microsoft seems confident that the new laptops it is preparing will outperform MacBook Air devices based on M3 processors, whether in terms of performance or operations that use artificial intelligence.
After years of promises from Qualcomm, Microsoft believes its upcoming Snapdragon These processors, on which Microsoft is betting big, will be integrated into a wide range of laptops as well as the new generation of consumer products in the Surface series.
Microsoft is so confident that Qualcomm's new processors will have a stimulating effect that it's planning a series of presentations that will show how much better they perform than the M3-equipped MacBook Air, in terms of processing power, AI acceleration, and even app simulation. According to an internal Microsoft document obtained by The Verge, the new AI-equipped computers will have faster application emulation than Rosetta 2, the system Apple uses in Apple Silicon Macs to translate proprietary processor applications designed for 64-bit Intel processors.
App emulation has been a serious issue for Windows on Arm over the past decade, but Microsoft achieved this emulation with Windows 11 just over two years ago. This ensures that applications can run on Windows on Arm when there is no native version designed for ARM64. These apps are key to improving the performance of the upcoming Windows on ARM-powered PCs, and Google recently released its own ARM64 version of Chrome to be ready for the upcoming devices.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is said to be planning to release models of the upcoming Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 with Snapdragon X Elite processors instead of Intel's Core Ultra. Microsoft has already announced professional versions of these computers, with Intel processors, but the Arm series models will target the average consumer.
The new PCs will be shown off on May 20, just one day before the start of the annual Build conference aimed at developers. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is expected to touch on the company's vision for AI in hardware and software, while the framework will be laid out for the new promotion of Windows on Arm and investments in AI operations for Windows 11.
Microsoft is said to be promoting the idea of a tagline along the lines of “A copilot for every person,” a reference to the company’s historical vision for Windows, which wanted “a personal computer in every home.” There is a strong trend within the company to enhance artificial intelligence through the Windows system, while the company expects, according to press information, that 50% of new Windows devices will contain processors capable of handling artificial intelligence operations by the end of 2026. Arm devices are expected to be unveiled in June, just one month after Microsoft announced its plans for AI-powered PCs.
