Microsoft appears to be preparing its own AI-powered optimization feature for PC titles, in a move reminiscent of DLSS. Over the weekend, such a feature was spotted in the latest beta builds of Windows 11, with Microsoft describing Automatic Resolution Enhancement as a way to “leverage artificial intelligence to make supported titles play smoother, with more detail.”
This feature, at least in the description, refers to Nvidia's DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), a technology that uses artificial intelligence to improve game resolution, refresh rate, and overall image quality. Both AMD and Intel have their own versions of this technology, with FSR and XeSS proving increasingly popular in recent PC releases.
Microsoft has not officially announced this new feature yet, so it is not entirely clear how it will be implemented in practice, nor whether it will require specific hardware. Nvidia's DLSS technology leverages the expanded cores found in RTX-series graphics cards, while AMD's FSR and Intel's XeSS power through competing cards.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on improving the color management feature of Windows 11, which will be especially useful for the latest generation of OLED displays that use HDR technology. Windows has lacked a robust operating system-level color management system for years, forcing PC users to add custom profiles through the Windows 95 reference window.
With the upcoming changes, color management will be integrated into the main picture setting area of Windows 11, allowing PC users to set color profiles for sRGB and DCI-P3. There's a new feature in the works as well that will automatically manage different color profiles.
“Automatic color management ensures that apps and other content display with color accuracy,” Microsoft says, commenting on the color management feature. It's unclear whether this will allow Windows 11 users to easily change gamma curves. It is hoped that these developments will mean a more systematic involvement of Microsoft with HDR support in Windows.
