Shortly after 18:00, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived at the Elysee Palace in Paris to participate in the conference organized by French President Emmanuel Macron on support for Ukraine.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is expected to explain that Greece has supported Ukraine from the beginning and that Athens will continue to support Kiev within its capabilities, was received by Emmanuel Macron on the threshold of the Elysee Palace.
Regarding the challenges that Europe has to face, Kyriakos Mitsotakis' message is that it must remain united and ready to respond, while regarding any potential challenge from Russia, the Prime Minister will emphasize that “Europe must also see this as a challenge.” A challenge to its strategic independence.
At the same time, it will indicate that another challenge to be overcome in the future concerns better coordination for the benefit of the European defense industry. After all, the European Council has already decided to support Ukraine with 50 billion euros.
However, the Greek side will insist that what is important, at present, is to ensure that this support is effective while it is also necessary to ensure and implement sanctions.
Why is Emmanuel Macron's conference being held?
Today, the international meeting on the Ukrainian issue is being held with the participation of heads of state and government, most of which are from European Union countries, following the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron.
French diplomatic sources confirmed today that, given the recent clear escalation of Russian aggression, in word and deed, the aim of the meeting is to review all means of effective assistance to Ukraine, but also to send a message to Moscow that Russia’s allies Kiev is not “tired,” as Russian propaganda often suggests. Sometimes, but she was “determined to prevent Russia from winning the war she had begun.”
The same sources said that Russia is gradually becoming an “agent of global destabilization,” that European public opinion must be fully informed of the dangers that lie ahead, and that tomorrow’s discussion will focus on “what more we can do and how we can do it better.” But they said that the meeting would not yield concrete announcements and that its main goal was to confirm the common strategy of all those who stood by Ukraine.
President Macron had the opportunity to discuss the objectives of the meeting with US President Joe Biden, with whom he held a phone call last Friday, as well as with German Chancellor Olaf Sols, who was among the European leaders who attended in Paris, such as, ultimately, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. . Finally, on the British side, as it became known, Foreign Secretary David Cameron will be present.
