But another series that has played a major role in developing this category over the years is the violent and bloody Mortal Kombat. After all, this is the game that led to the creation of the ESRB in the United States, which determines age ratings for video games.
Several years after the release of the first game, co-creator Ed Boon and NetherRealm Studios are celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary. Since the original Mortal Kombat debuted in arcades on October 8, 1992, the series has become one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. In total, under the name Mortal Kombat we find more than 20 games, multiple movies and even some episodic items.
As part of the celebrations, the team released a special trailer featuring a number of stills and thanked fans of the game around the world for their support of the series over the years.
NetherRealm reports that this is just the beginning of the series’ big anniversary celebration. As for what’s coming up, Ed Boon explained earlier this week what the focus will be on “30 Years” at the moment, and “announcement of the upcoming match will come on a separate date” from those celebrations.
