Called the Adaptive Display Concept, it showcases new ways smartphones can transform beyond current foldable designs.
The phone uses a flexible pOLED Full HD+ display that Motorola says can adjust its shape for different scenarios. By folding it in half, for example, the 6.9-inch screen shrinks into a compact device with a 4.6-inch screen. It can also stand on its own thanks to its flexible form factor.
Unlike current foldable smartphones that require hinges, Motorola’s idea relies entirely on the flexibility of the screen to change. This allows the phone to bend into a bracelet shape and wrap securely around the user’s wrist when not in use. The phone can also use this wraparound mode to act as a remote camera to take selfies from a distance.
However, while the wrap-around design allows for some comfortable use cases, it also has obvious drawbacks. The phone is prone to slipping easily from thin wrists or during physical activity. Further improvements will be needed before this idea becomes a viable commercial product, if ever.
The shape-shifting phone was unveiled by Motorola’s parent company Lenovo at the recent Tech World event. Lenovo previously introduced a similar phone in 2016, but cited issues with its versatility and reliability. Motorola’s new prototype shows an improved implementation of the foldable phone vision.
It’s worth noting that phone makers like Motorola often showcase such extreme devices to gauge public interest and demonstrate innovation, without promising an actual release of the device.
But whether a wraparound phone is made or not, Motorola deserves credit. The idea of transforming screens in dazzling new ways points to an exciting future. Even if ideas like this wraparound phone never reach the market, they help inspire the next generation of mobile technology.
