At Gamescom 2024, tech giants MSI and ASUS unveiled new motherboards with innovative graphics card quick release mechanisms, marking a new era in PC buildability and upgradability.

ASUS has unveiled the ROG X870E Hero motherboard, which features two major improvements: a quick-release mechanism for the main M.2 slot and a “PCIe Q Release Slim” for the graphics card. As speed builder Der8auer explains, the new design allows the graphics card to automatically eject when pulled from the front, eliminating the need for manual removal.

On the other hand, MSI has introduced the Z890 MPG Edge motherboard for Intel Arrow-Lake S processors, which features an ‘EZ PCIe Release’ mechanism. Unlike ASUS’ approach, MSI has placed the release switch on the top of the horizontal length of the graphics card, next to the DIMM slot. While this solution may not be as user-friendly as ASUS’ new Q-release system, it is still more convenient than the more commonly used methods.

These new mechanisms are a constant problem for friends and professionals in the field. As graphics cards grow in width and length, removing them from the motherboard becomes more difficult, especially when there are obstacles like bulky CPU coolers or M.2 slots.
