Imagine that Austria is a country with a low crime rate. 17 teenagers are suspected of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl “several times a week for several months” in Austria, and videotaped their actions, police said today.
Police officer Florian Vita told reporters that the incidents took place in a poor area south of Vienna “between February and June 2023, in stairs, in toilets, in a parking lot, in a hotel or in the homes of the perpetrators.”
Most of the suspects are minors and are of Syrian, Turkish, Italian, Bulgarian and Serbian origin. Two of them are under the age of 14 and are not considered criminally responsible.
Almost all of the suspects were known to police for other crimes and are now charged with sexual offenses and producing images of sexual abuse of a minor.
Thirteen of them appeared before the investigator yesterday and partially denied the facts.
The accused and the victim, an Austrian citizen, met through one of the teenagers who harassed the girl. Then he made contact with the other boys.
They shared videos of their actions on social media, and one of them is suspected of threatening to publish the photos if the victim refused to go with him. But according to police, no video was posted online.
Fearing retaliation, the girl did not reveal what she was going through until she finally confided in her mother in October, who filed a lawsuit.
The Public Prosecution is expected to take over the investigation, which was called to shed light on this case.
