The company revealed that the next version of Chrome for Windows and Mac will integrate three AI features, including smart tab organization, custom theme creation, and a typing assistant.
The writing assistant can be compared to a feature found in Google's experimental AI research project, the Generative Search Experiment (SGE). SGE allows users to receive AI-assisted guidance when writing content such as emails with different colors and different lengths of text.
In Chrome, Google suggests that the built-in writing assistant can help with writing company reviews, RSVPs, formal rental-related questions, public forum posts, and more. The still-beta feature will be available next month by right-clicking on a text box on the web and choosing “Help me type.” Users will be able to activate the feature by typing a few words, after which Google's artificial intelligence will generate complementary text.
Additionally, AI can make it easier to organize group tabs and customize the browser theme. Chrome's existing Tab Groups tool allows users to manage multiple open tabs by categorizing them into labeled groups. However, manually grouping tabs can be tedious. The New Tab Organization will automatically suggest and create groups based on your currently open tabs. It also suggests intuitive names and emojis for automated groups. This feature is intended to help the user with common multi-tab activities such as online shopping, travel planning, and searching.
Chrome will also adopt the same text-to-image model that was recently introduced on Pixel devices running Android 14. It will allow for the creation of custom browser themes using natural language prompts that define mood, style, color, and theme. Previously, users could only choose from Chrome's default set of monochromatic and artistic themes. The new feature allows the creation of custom themes that go beyond predefined options to better match user preferences.
This feature at least allows Chrome users without Android devices to explore Google's generative AI features for customization, even if they rely on a simpler theme for everyday use.
The feature that will provide text typing assistance won't appear until next month, but the tab organizer and theme creation will be available in the coming days for US users using the latest version of Chrome for Windows and Mac. Users can access experimental features by logging into Chrome, going to Settings and going to the “Experimental AI” section. As beta features, they will not initially reach enterprise and education customers.
The new additions come in addition to the AI and machine learning tools already in Chrome, such as audio/video captions, malicious website protection via Android Safe Browsing, instant audio muting, and webpage summarization via the “SGE while browsing” option.
Finally, Google indicates that more AI and machine learning features are scheduled to be available for Chrome over the next year. This includes integration with the new Gemini template for easier cross-browser browsing.
