On Monday, OpenAI introduced a new model for artificial intelligence It was named GPT-4o, along with a desktop version of ChatGPT, along with a revamped user interface, as part of the company’s efforts to expand the use of the popular chatbot it developed. Her new effort is essentially an alternative to smart assistants found in smartphones like Google Assistant and Siri, with much better performance, since the benefit is much greater as the following videos attest.
Now, GPT-4 is available to everyone, including those covered by free versions of OpenAI services, Mira Moratti, the company’s chief technology officer, announced during a webinar. He even noted that the new model, branded GPT-4o, is “much faster,” with improved text, video and audio capabilities, with Moratti citing a “leap” in ease of use.
OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, is valued by investors at $80 billion. Founded in 2015, the company is under pressure to stay at the top of the creative AI market, and is trying to find ways to generate revenue as it spends huge sums to buy processors and build the infrastructure needed to create and train its models.
The new model offers improved quality and speed in 50 different languages, while it will also be available through the OpenAI API so developers can start building apps using the new model right away. GPT-4o is twice as fast, with half the operating cost, compared to GPT-4 Turbo, Moratti said.
Members of the OpenAI team demonstrated the model’s new auditory capabilities, asking it to help them relax before giving a public speech. Mark Chen, a researcher at OpenAI, said that the new model has the ability to “sense the feelings” of the user, noting that it is able to deal with situations in which users interrupt while providing a response. During the demonstration, the model was asked to analyze the user’s facial expressions and comment on the emotions that person might be experiencing.
“Hi, how are you? How can I make your day better today?” ChatGPT is brought up through its audio feature when it is greeted by the user.
Chen introduced the model’s ability to tell a story and asked him to change the tone of his voice to be more theatrical or robotic. At one point he even asked him to sing the fairy tale.
The new OpenAI model can also act as an interpreter, even in voice mode, the company said. Chen demonstrated the tool’s ability to listen to Moratti speaking Italian while he spoke English and translate into the two languages in question as they spoke.
Team members also demonstrated the model’s ability to solve mathematical equations and help write code, making it more competitive against Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot.
For OpenAI, this was one of the most significant announcements since the August launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, the company’s professional chatbot.
OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are at the forefront of creative AI, as companies from every field of human endeavor rush to integrate chatbots and AI models into their services to keep up with the competition. Earlier in May, Anthropic, one of OpenAI’s main competitors, announced a new professional product category, as well as a free iPhone app.
By 2023, $29.1 billion had been invested in about 700 projects around creative AI, an increase of 260% from the previous year. Within a decade, it is estimated that market revenues will exceed $1 trillion.
At the same time, there are concerns about the speed with which new services are being introduced to the market without being adequately tested, while concerns are also expressed about the tendency of this new technology to reproduce stereotypes.
After launching in November 2022, ChatGPT began breaking records one after another as the fastest growing consumer app in history and now has around 100 million active users every week. OpenAI reports that the vast majority of Fortune 500 companies, more than 92%, use the platform.
During the presentation, Moratti said that OpenAI wants to “remove the veil of mystery” surrounding the technology, announcing that these features will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.
In conclusion, he thanked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his company for building the necessary graphics processing units (GPUs) on which OpenAI technology is based. You can watch OpenAI’s full presentation in the video below.
