The surge in home-delivered online orders has increased operating costs for supermarket chains, and there are now concerns about whether they should introduce new fees or increase existing ones.
The first step, however, was taken by the “Sklavenitis” chain, which in its announcement informed that for purchases from 30 to 100 euros, the cost of home delivery of the order is 5 euros, while purchases above remain free, that is, without shipping 100 euros.
It should be noted that, to date, Sklavenitis has not charged a fee for orders over €30, while it has charged a fee for orders under this amount from €2 to €6.
A move that should come as no surprise as it was planned and “frozen” due to high inflation.
This move by “Sklavenitis” is sure to find imitators because most companies do not charge shipping fees for orders over 40-50 euros, while, according to estimates by chain executives, free home delivery leads to a loss of about 10% of turnover.
What remains is whether consumers will continue with e-commerce, given that they have been taught by supermarkets about free distribution, and whether this change will act as a deterrent to buying products online.
