A strong reaction from New Democracy and the ELAS Attica officers’ union was caused by the posts of MEP Nikos Pappas, who accuse police officers of contempt and racist behavior.
In fact, the ND is demanding the expulsion of the MEP with its notification.
“After the announcement by the Attica Greek Police Officers Union about brutal attacks on police officers by SYRIZA MEP Nikos Pappas on social media, it is clear that the official opposition is dominated only by polarization. We are unable to reproduce both the images and audio that appeared on the Internet,” announced the press office of New Democracy.
“Mr. Pappas’ brutal and appalling behavior is a cruel affront to the thousands of police officers who do their duty to protect our fellow citizens with self-sacrifice, consistency, humanity and responsibility. To imagine our country’s representative in the European Parliament behaving like the worst thug and unleashing one threat after another. Let’s hope Mr. Kassalakis does it openly and doesn’t see another “half-deletion” like in the Polakis case, NT concludes.
The reaction of the Union of Greek Police Officers of Attica
A statement issued by the Greek Police Officers’ Union of Attica after the incident stated the following:
“Dear Colleagues, through their posts on social media, some people perpetuate inexplicably oppressive and racist stereotypes about police officers. Their vile hatred of police officers is revealed at every opportunity. Who do they think they are being liked this way?
Any derogatory description of police officers will not touch us. Rather, perhaps, it proves that we are doing our jobs better because a minority of fanatics continue to abuse us. The irony is that the abuser, MEP Nicos Pappas, by virtue of his position and capacity, was supposed to represent the people and not expose himself to the abusive, racist and demeaning characterizations of the embattled police.
Dear Colleagues, We continue our work and do our duty.. The reward comes from our fellow citizens who give us our help every day. We do not divide our fellow man into groups by any criteria. We defend and protect our homeland, our borders, our history. We obey the Constitution and state laws. These officers are represented by the Greek Police and we serve them as the Greek Police. Good luck in our mission to provide invaluable security to our fellow citizens.”
What did Nicos Pappas answer?
Through a story on Instagram, the MEP talks about a micro-political conflict whose aim is to “change the agenda from the fire”, and “it’s better to deal with more serious issues in Maximos. People are burning, dying, living on the street, you’re flying a kite.”
What he said in detail
“Seeing the disaster government have such immediate reflexes in an effort to micro-politicize, shift the agenda away from the fire and issue a statement against me, I think it would have been better to have taken almost half the immediate action last week. Attica burned. Anyway. Since then I’ve I respect and recognize the security organizations, they themselves know that in the private discussions we have had, but I will not accept any far-right trolls insulting me and my family in the same way, this does not deny my MEP position, my values and personality It’s better to deal with more serious problems, people are burning, dying, living on the street, and you’re flying a kite.”
In an online dispute with a police officer, Nikos Pappas allegedly unleashed insults against the industry, while in audio posted online, he can be heard telling the chatter via text messages: “Good luck with everything you want”.
