First effects on the supply chain as the agricultural world mobilizes to demand better wages for their produce.
Consumers in Belgium, Luxembourg and France have faced empty shelves in recent days amid widespread farm protests, as farmers demand better wages for their produce and “fair competition” from cheaper imports. As user X (ex-Twitter) points out, they are beginning to understand what the slogan of the ongoing agricultural mobilizations means, “No farmers, no food”.
Many pictures and videos of shortages in supermarkets are circulating on the internet and social media.
The blockades of major highways caused problems in the supply chain, mainly with shortages of fresh vegetables, meat and dairy products.
Julien Wathieu, Lidl's representative in Luxembourg, told RTL they were facing a shortage of fresh food. Lidl's branches in the Grand Duchy are supplied by the company's Belgian distribution centers, with shelves left empty in recent days after supply trucks were unable to make deliveries.
Another X user warned today with his post: “Lidl and Delhaize are out of products in some EU countries. Due to farmer protests in Germany, France and Belgium. This photo was taken yesterday and shows our future if we don't support farmers now.
Last Thursday, when the summit of 27 EU leaders met, farmers were “present” in Brussels. While many restrictions have been lifted in France after the government's latest announcements on Thursday night, they remain under siege in Belgium.
About 15 tractors arrived at the Belgian Prime Minister's Flanders home last night. Around 10:30 p.m., the farmers went to Alexander de Croo's house to meet him, reports Head Ladsday News. He discussed with them the next steps at the federal and European level. An hour later the farmers dispersed. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, they said they had a constructive discussion and the prime minister was friendly with them, but their activities did not end as they said.
