NVIDIA places the new graphics card in the “mid-range” claiming that it’s ideal for 1440p gaming with 100+ frames per second with ray tracing and DLSS 3 (the company’s new version of the upgrade technology) enabled.
The new GeForce RTX 4070 is the first GeForce RTX 40-series graphics card that is… a regular size and therefore can fit in many different computer cases. The new GeForce RTX 4070 is shorter than the GeForce RTX 3080 and is designed to deliver similar performance at at least 1440p. The GPU is naturally based on the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture and houses 12GB of 21Gbps GDDR6X memory with 192-bit bandwidth.
The GeForce RTX 4070 is based on the same graphics processor (AD104) as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, albeit with “reduced features”. More specifically, it has 5888 CUDA cores, 46 ray tracing (RT) cores, 184 tensor cores, 184 texture mapping units (TMU), and 64 ROPs. Offers all the features of “Ada Lovelace” including dual video encoding accelerators, an optical stream accelerator, and DLSS 3 frame generation technology. The card has a 200W TBP (Typical Board Power) with NVIDIA allowing partner companies to use an 8-pin PCI-E connector for power supply Its auxiliary power supply is in place of the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector.
The new GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card includes support for the AV1 codec, which will soon be extremely useful to streamers as YouTube prepares to roll out “AV1 Livestreaming” soon to improve bitrates as well as picture quality. As mentioned, the new graphics card also supports the upgrade technology called DLSS 3 which promises to increase the frame rate in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, and Redfall.
DLSS 3 technology is exclusive to GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards and uses the same artificial intelligence (AI) as DLSS 2 technology, albeit along with new AI frame generation technology. With DLSS 3, two frames are created using existing rendering technologies and then a third frame is inserted between them to boost the frames significantly, which is especially important when using ray tracing or other optimizations like path tracing in Cyberpunk 2077.
NVIDIA claims that 83% of GeForce RTX 40 series owners can ray tracing in games that support this feature, with 79% also enabling DLSS. GeForce RTX 30 series graphics card owners enable DLSS in 71% of the games that support it, while 68% of GeForce RTX 20 series graphics card owners enable the technology in the same titles.
