After the initial offer of 12GB RTX 4080 Last month Along with a more powerful 16GB model, Nvidia now admits it made a naming mistake. Nvidia says in Blog post. The article continues: “Having two GPUs under the name 4080 confuses the market.”
Hence, Nvidia has officially stopped releasing the RTX 4080 12GB, and is going ahead with releasing the 16GB version on November 16th.
One criticism of the company is its decision to name the 12GB RTX 4080 model, especially when the 16GB model was significantly better in performance. Based on early benchmarks, the RTX 4080 12GB is only 12% faster than the RTX 3080 and slower per game than the 3090Ti.
The RTX 4080 12GB was supposed to start at $899 and feature 7,680 CUDA cores, a 2.31GHz base clock up to 2.61GHz, 639 Tensor-TFLOPs, 92 RT-TFLOPs, and 40 Shader-TFLOPs. The 16GB RTX 4080 is much more powerful, with 9,728 CUDA Cores, a 2.21GHz base clock up to 2.51GHz, 780 Tensor-TFLOPs, 113 RT-TFLOPs, and 49 Shader-TFLOPs of power.
This development affects those who were hoping for a reasonable price for a model belonging to the RTX 40 series, who will now have to be patient for an unknown period of time. The RTX 4080 16GB will debut next month, with a starting price of $1,199, and so far Nvidia hasn’t revealed when it will re-launch the RTX 4080 12GB and under what name exactly. The indicative prices announced by the company for Europe have the RTX 4080 (12 GB) starting at € 1,099 and the RTX 4080 (16 GB) starting at € 1,469.
